INNER VS OUTER CONCH PIERCING

Inner Conch: Located in the bowl-shaped center cartilage of the ear, it is large and flat. Ideal for statement pieces like large hoops or decorative studs.
Outer Conch: The outer cartilage ridge below the helix. Offers a more subtle look suitable for small to medium-sized jewelry.

CONCH PIERCING NEAR PORTLAND

We are committed to expert placement of conch piercings, especially in our large cartilage area which requires proper depth judgment. Our team is also welcoming of walk-ins during Tuesday-Saturday hours from 12pm-6pm.

PAIN LEVEL — INNER CONCH PIERCING

Conch piercings can be quite intense, with a pain level ranging from 6 to 7/10. This is due to the thick cartilage in the center of the ear, which requires more pressure and time when compared to lobe/helix piercings.

HEALING TIME

Healing times for conch piercings vary by individual but generally take 6-12 months for an inner conch and 6-9 months for an outer conch. These healing periods can be affected by wearing earbuds/AirPods, sleeping positions, or glasses frames.

JEWELRY FOR INNER CONCH

For initial jewelry, we recommend a flat-back labret stud (made of titanium) with a longer post for swelling. After healing, popular options include large hoops and conch hoops ranging from 10mm to 12mm in diameter. For an outer conch piercing, consider the orbit or orbital jewelry, which connects the inner conch to the helix via a chain.

EBUD PROBLEM WITH CONCH

Earbuds and AirPods can pose challenges for both inner and outer conch piercings. In-ear earbuds cannot be worn during the healing period, even after it is complete. Over-ear headphones are fine.

CONCH PUNCH VS NEEDLE

We exclusively use needles for conch piercing due to the risk of dermal punch surgery removing tissue permanently. A needle creates a smaller opening and is safer for initial healing. Dermal punches are only used for dermal piercings, not for conch piercings.

What is a conch piercing?
A conch piercing is located in the cartilage of the ear, below the helix and above the outer rim. It offers a unique look suitable for both statement pieces and subtler, more elegant jewelry options.
Does an inner conch piercing hurt a lot?
The pain level can range from 6 to 7/10, especially when dealing with thick cartilage in the center of the ear. This is due to the initial depth needed for proper healing and the pressure required during the needle insertion process.
How long does a conch piercing take to heal?
Healing times can vary from 6-12 months for an inner conch to 6-9 months for an outer conch. The rate of healing is influenced by factors like earbud usage, sleeping positions, and glasses frame pressure.
Can I wear AirPods with a conch piercing?
No, in-ear earbuds cannot be worn during the healing process for both inner and outer conch piercings. Even after it is complete, they can press on your jewelry, so over-ear headphones are recommended.
What size hoop fits in a healed conch piercing?
For an initial fitting, we recommend flat-back labret studs (titanium) with longer posts to accommodate swelling. After healing, popular sizes for hoops include 10mm and 12mm diameter options.
What is the difference between inner and outer conch piercings?
The inner conch is located in the center of the ear cartilage, offering a more dramatic look with larger jewelry pieces like large hoops or decorative studs. The outer conch is situated below the helix; it's more subtle, suitable for smaller to medium-sized jewelry options.
