Nose Piercing Aftercare: Complete Guide from Professional Piercers
Proper aftercare is the single most important factor in achieving a beautifully healed nose piercing. At Multnomah Body Piercing in Gresham, Oregon, we have guided thousands of clients through the healing process over our 50+ years in business.
The Golden Rules of Nose Piercing Aftercare
- Do not touch it — the number one cause of complications
- Clean only with saline — no alcohol, peroxide, tea tree oil, or ointments
- Do not rotate or twist the jewelry — this tears newly forming tissue
- Leave the jewelry in — do not change or remove until fully healed
- Be patient — nose piercings take 4-6 months minimum
How to Clean Your Nose Piercing
What You Need
- Sterile saline wound wash (0.9% sodium chloride, no additives)
- Clean, lint-free paper towels or gauze
Cleaning Process (Twice Daily)
- Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water
- Spray sterile saline directly onto both sides of the piercing
- Let the saline sit for 30-60 seconds to soften any dried discharge
- Gently pat dry with a clean paper towel — never cloth towels or cotton balls
- Do not rotate, twist, or move the jewelry during cleaning
Products to AVOID
- Rubbing alcohol — kills healthy healing cells
- Hydrogen peroxide — damages tissue and delays healing
- Tea tree oil — can cause chemical burns and irritation
- Neosporin / antibiotic ointment — traps bacteria
- Antibacterial soap — too harsh for healing wounds
Healing Timeline
Week 1-2: Initial Healing
Expect mild swelling, redness, and tenderness. Clear or slightly yellowish discharge is normal lymph fluid.
Week 3-8: Active Healing
Swelling subsides gradually. You may see occasional "crusting" — dried lymph fluid, completely normal. Continue saline routine.
Month 3-6: Maturation
The external skin appears healed, but the internal fistula is still maturing. Do not assume it is healed — maintain aftercare.
Month 6+: Fully Healed
Your piercer will confirm when it is safe to change jewelry. Visit us at Multnomah Body Piercing for your first jewelry change.
Common Problems and Solutions
Irritation Bumps
Small bumps near the piercing are almost always irritation bumps, not keloids. Causes include touching, sleeping on it, or snagging. Eliminate the irritant, maintain saline care, and be patient. Most resolve in 2-4 weeks.
When to Contact Your Piercer
- Increasing pain, swelling, or redness after the first week
- Thick, green, or foul-smelling discharge
- A bump that persists after 3 weeks of proper care
- Jewelry that appears to be embedding into the skin
